Project 3 - Benfeita

House near to Benfeita

This project proved a real challenge. The access alone was via 2km of forest track of which parts were only accessible by 4 wheel drive. The specification here was to incorporate two small ruins in the construction of a sustainable three bedroomed contemporary farmhouse.

Before Project

The design was very much based around what already existed to imbue the finished home with lots of character. Mostly natural materials were used in the construction and the principle of insulated thermal mass was used to buffer internal temperature changes. Doors and windows are all from sustainably produced hardwood with double glazed units and the central heating system uses wood.

Internal details

Double glazed hardwood french doors and side strips fold out fully to give wide access to balcony.

The resulting house stays cool in the summer without the need of any air conditioning   (when external temperatures can exceed 40'C) and warm in the winter using a minimal amount of fuel.

Kitchen and Lounge

The workmanship shows the level of skill involved in the construction of a somewhat demanding and  complicated project. The results speak for themselves.
